In a new Brainfluence Brief, Roger Dooley chats with behavioral marketing expert Nancy Harhut about automatic compliance triggers and how they can be effectively used in marketing. Here are some highlights:
What Are Automatic Compliance Triggers?
Automatic compliance triggers are cues or signals that can influence people to agree or comply with requests without much deliberation. These triggers tap into our subconscious and prompt a quick response, often bypassing our analytical thinking processes.
The Power of “Because”
As I described in Can One Word Turn Nonsense into Powerful Persuasion?, one of the most compelling automatic compliance triggers is the word “because.” Harhut describes the study by Ellen Langer at Harvard, where participants were asked to cut in line for a photocopier. When people simply asked to cut in line, about 60% agreed. However, when they added a reason, saying, “Can I cut in line because I’m in a hurry?” the compliance rate jumped to 94%.
Interestingly, even a less substantial reason like “because I have some copies to make” resulted in a similarly high compliance rate. This demonstrates that the word “because” alone can trigger a compliance response, as people perceive any following reason as justifiable.
Visual Persuasion: Charts and Graphs
Another effective compliance trigger mentioned by Harhut is the use of charts or graphs. These visual elements suggest scientific accuracy and reliability, often leading people to trust the accompanying information without scrutinizing the details. For instance, in marketing campaigns for a major metropolitan newspaper, including a simple price comparison chart significantly boosted subscription rates. The chart’s mere presence conveyed credibility and trust, leading to higher engagement and conversions.
Practical Applications in Marketing
- Incorporate “Because” in Your Requests: When crafting marketing messages, always provide a reason for your requests, even if it’s not compelling. Phrases like “Sign up today because it’s beneficial for your health” can increase compliance.
- Use Visual Aids: Enhance your marketing content with charts, graphs, and infographics. These elements can boost the perceived validity of your claims and make your content more persuasive.
- Leverage Social Proof: Similar to the compliance trigger effect, showcasing user testimonials or displaying the number of satisfied customers can trigger automatic compliance through social proof. People are more likely to follow actions taken by others.
- Reduce Friction: Reduce friction in the decision-making process by simplifying options, eliminating steps, etc. The easier it is to take action, the more likely your automatic compliance approach will work.
Understanding and utilizing automatic compliance triggers can significantly enhance the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. By strategically incorporating triggers like the word “because” and visual aids, marketers can prompt quicker and more favorable responses from their customers.
